There’s no question that sipping a warm cup of delicious tea can be a very pleasant experience. But as researchers are discovering, green, black, white, and other varieties of tea may provide an array of health benefits. We find that many of our Loveland home care clients enjoy a cup or two a day, and we find it encouraging that it may be helping them stay healthy.
Taking Time Out for Tea
Many studies have looked at the health benefits of tea. Recently, researchers at the National University of Singapore reported findings indicating that tea drinking can protect seniors from cognitive decline. The study of 957 Chinese seniors aged 55 and older found that drinking tea regularly lowers the risk of cognitive decline by 50 percent, and that in people genetically at risk for developing Alzheimer’s disease, the reduction in risk may be as much as 86 percent.
Needless to say, the time it takes to brew and drink a cup or two of tea each day is time well spent, as we tell the seniors for whom we provide Loveland home care. And the cognitive benefit is just the beginning. Consuming green, black, or white tea has also been shown to:
- Lower cholesterol
- Increase metabolism
- Possibly decrease the risk of certain types of cancer
- Play a role in preventing diabetes
- Reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and hypertension
- Improve circulation
Research continues on the specifics of how tea drinking causes these positive changes. But whatever the mechanism, it’s clear that tea is a beverage that we should all probably be drinking more of.
As a leading Loveland home care provider, we are eager to share information on lifestyle changes that can help seniors live happier, healthier lives.
